  • The book presents recent estimates of the rates in changes of major land classes such as forest, cropland and pasture. Among the causative mechanisms behind land change, synergetic factor combinations are found to be more common than single key factor explanations. Aggregated globally, multiple impacts of local land changes are shown to significantly affect central aspects of Earth System functioning. Innovative developments and applications in the fields of modeling and scenario construction are presented. Finally, conclusions are drawn about the most pressing implications for the design of appropriate intervention policies, and on new directions and frontiers of research.

"Over the past few decades researchers have generated numerous publications highlighting advances in trends and determinants of adult mortality changes.  Now, Richard Rogers and Eileen Crimmins have engaged many of the leading contributors to that storehouse of information to place in a single volume the present state of knowledge about human adult mortality, its variations over time and place and its many causes, as well as influential policy formulations.  The book’s rich and elaborate treatment of the subject, including methodological considerations and extensive literature reviews, establishes a benchmark for monitoring future developments of the subject that other researchers and students will rely on for years to come". Charles B. Nam, Distinguished Research Professor Emeritus, Florida State University "There is very considerable diversity both within and among countries in the mortality experience of adults, and this diversity is well captured, described and explained in the course of this book. This wide-ranging and exhaustive collection of studies of adult mortality gives a fascinating account. A complete analysis of the characteristics of adult morality and its extension to the morbid process preceding death, but above all the involvement of scholars from various disciplines, make this book an important reference point not only for the academic world – researchers, teachers and students – but also for the political world and those working in the health services. Its contents are particularly valuable for implementing health and social policies that aim to reduce the consequences of inequality and thus to provide better health for all". Graziella Caselli, University of Rome “La Sapienza”. "This book is a landmark publication. It comes close to being a recipe for a long and healthy life. The book lays out the factors that explain the gains in life expectancy and health expectancy witnessed across the world. They are genetic, behavioral, social, environmental and institutional. Richard Rogers and Eileen Crimmins assembled an interdisciplinary team of first-class scientists from different countries of the world to uncover the secrets of avoidable mortality and delayed morbidity. The book also documents why in some countries life expectancy stagnated and in some places even declined. The historical and global perspective on mortality change makes the International Handbook of Adult Mortality a must-read for anyone interested in living longer and postponing disease and disability. The book will be a standard reference for years to come". Frans Willekens, Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI) "An outstanding job of organizing and synthesizing knowledge in all of the important areas of research on adult mortality. By consolidating a surprisingly rich array of major research accomplishments, the volume sets the stage for rapid advances in the future." Samuel H. Preston, Fredrick J. Warren Professor of Demography, University of Pennsylvania

This handbook presents a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of unprecedented substantive, theoretical, methodological, and statistical developments and insights, and an in-depth examination of trends and patterns, in adult mortality around the world. With over two dozen chapters and more than fifty authors, this volume draws from top international mortality experts to provide one of the best overviews of life expectancy extant. The handbook documents remarkable gains in life expectancy, which stand out as one of the most important accomplishments of the twentieth century. Individuals in more developed countries can expect to live longer now than ever before, especially the Japanese, who enjoy record-setting life expectancies. The book also explores unfortunate declines in life expectancy in selected countries brought on by such factors as the following: infectious diseases; accidents, suicides, and homicides; and political and economic conflict and turmoil. This book synthesizes the wealth of mortality information available, clearly articulates the central findings to-date, identifies the most appropriate datasets and methods currently available, illuminates the central research questions, and develops an agenda to address these research questions. The authors carefully examine central factors related to mortality, including health behaviors, socioeconomic status, social relations, biomarkers, and genetic factors. The book will prove especially relevant to researchers, students, and policy makers within social and health sciences who want to better understand international trends and patterns in adult mortality.

"...will become the first 'cult' book in the field...a dazzling and positive interpretation..." (RUDI.net, Jan 06)
"...an excellent book..." (Architects Journal, April 2006)

"This book offers a very useful history of ideas of urban design" (Urban Design, May 2006)

“…the first serious attempt to understand contemporary cities…” (Architectural Review, August 2006)

Recombinant Urbanism develops the urban-modeling techniques, first pioneered by Kevin Lynch, into a comprehensive framework for the fast-growing discipline of urban design. Covering the origins of urban design in North America and Europe, it discusses the main approaches that have evolved to deal with the fragmented contemporary city. It also looks at the influence of participatory planning processes, zoning codes, imagery, finance, and marketing on urban form. Shane describes how the very same forces at work behind the freedom of the individual have also led to a widespread urban dispersal. In the final chapters, Shane brings his argument up to date with an exciting and innovative vision of contemporary practice, in which urban actors combine urban elements in networked cities. While the urban-planning touchstones of pattern recognition, scaling, urban morphologies, and zoning codes remain at the fore, their role is stressed as a transient one. They are presented as ever-changing structures, subject to constant feedback and alteration by a changing cast of catalytic urban actors.
Providing a sophisticated and potent set of tools for urban designers and urban-design students, recombinant Urbanism also recasts urban modeling as an effective method of augmenting standard architectural design practices in an urban context.

Now in its fifth edition, this ground-breaking text has been comprehensively revised to reflect the changing nature and practice of human geography and its rapidly developing connections with other fields.
The major entries not only describe the development of concepts, contributions and debates in human geography, but also advance them. Shorter, definitional entries allow quick reference and coverage of the wider subject area. Changes to the fifth edition include entries from many new contributors at the forefront of developments in the field, and over 300 key terms appearing for the first time. It features a new consolidated bibliography along with a detailed index and systematic cross-referencing of headwords.

The Dictionary of Human Geography continues to be the one guidebook no student, instructor or researcher in the field can afford to be without.

"Thomas Miceli offers a thorough and readable review of modern economic theories of eminent domain, several of which he has been instrumental in developing. This will be the "go-to" book on the subject for years to come. Seasoned scholars and students will benefit from his accessible descriptions and careful development of the major principles." - William Fischel, Dartmouth College

"Miceli's book is a must-read for anyone with a substantive interest in the law and economics of property. Its clear, comprehensive, non-technical exposition makes it readily accessible to students of law, politics, and economics." - Daniel L. Rubinfeld, School of Law, University of California, Berkeley

"No scholar is better suited than Tom Miceli to write about the economics of eminent domain. This superb book reflects Tom's strong analytic and superior expository skills." - Perry Shapiro, University of California, Santa Barbara

"Thomas Miceli's book on eminent domain will provide for the first time a theoretical work devoted to the economic underpinnings of this basic feature of property law. Because of Miceli's expertise in the field of eminent domain and the accessibility of the book - it is not technical - it should provide a valuable resource to a wide audience." - Steven Shavell, Harvard Law School

This book uses economic theory to examine the proper scope of the government's constitutional power of eminent domain, which entitles it to take private property for public use, provided that it pays the owner just compensation. It is the first book to survey the large economic literature in this area, and to present it in a way that illuminates the debate over this contentious subject. It is written in a nontechnical way to be accessible to general readers, but economists will benefit from the state-of-the-art models presented in the appendices.

“A superb addition to the literature on planning support systems (PSS). This book is a “must read” for the urban planning researcher or practitioner who wants to keep current in this rapidly evolving field.” Applied Spatial Analysis and Policy, volume 3, issue 1, 2011.

This book is about a particular set of geo-information technologies known as Planning Support Systems (PSS). It focuses on the adoption and application of PSS in practice. It aims to illustrate best practice and to demonstrate new methods that are being developed for creating the next generation of PSS for use in various public or private sector planning contexts. The book serves as a medium for the exchange of knowledge, insights and experiences, thereby preventing those working in this field from having to ‘reinvent the wheel’. It also serves to communicate details about PSS methodology and management to those less informed about contemporary developments. The book stimulates new and exciting applications of PSS in diverse planning situations. It provides planning practitioners, system developers and researchers with helpful insights into what planning support systems are, how they can be constructed and implemented, and in which situations they can provide valuable support for decision making.
